Using Chicago formatting when writing a term paper

Chicago formatting is the most widely used form of writing and referencing in the English language. The essentials of this style are easy remember if you’re used to reading books and academic papers that have been written using this style.

There are many basics that need to be adhered to which we take for granted while writing. However, many students aren’t aware of what these rules are and therefore lose marks needlessly when their papers are marked. Writing styles are usually subject-specific, but unless you have been instructed otherwise, using the Chicago style is a safe norm to adapt to.

To go through all of the many language rules Chicago requires would be pointless, however, here we will provide you with some of the language basics that should accompany every Chicago style term paper:

Dates

For history term papers, it helps to know how to write down dates. Don’t write out your dates in words; rather, write only the month in word form, then the day in numeral form, and then the year in numeral form with commas in between the day and year numerals.

Example: July 4, 1776

Punctuation

We could say that there is an English standard for punctuation and spelling, but there really isn’t. Different countries do things differently, which is why Chicago forms a standard for writing styles across academic arenas. Suffice to say there are too many punctuation rules to mention them here, but source a good list of Chicago punctuation from your nearest library or campus writing center and make a point of keeping an easy to follow reference for when you write your term paper.

Location names

Don’t fall into the habit of abbreviating on state, country and town names. Always write out the full name when writing in Chicago style.

Example: USA is wrong, but United States is correct.

Titles

If you are referring to a book, painting, film, poem or anything that holds a title, always write each word in capitals and the whole title in italics. This distinguishes the title from your speech. Avoid putting titles in inverted commas.

As mentioned, there are a lot more language requirements you will need to adhere to when writing in Chicago style, but getting used to them all is not that hard. Download a good list from college and university websites or just ask for them at a library.
