A full citation of a source has two stages: the first one is the in-text citation which appears in the text of your paper, the second is the Work Cited List and it appears at the end of your work on a separate page. Any quote in the text should be followed by the parenthesized last name of the author of the book you have taken the quote from and the number of the page; there shouldn’t be any comma between these two components: (Smith 25). If you have used electronic documents, don’t include the number of the page.

    • a) Block quotes.
    • If you have to include a long quote (that is several lines long), increase the indent. The author’s name and the page number should be placed after the period. If the quotation takes up more than one page, put the hyphen between the numbers of the pages: (Smith 25-27).

    • If the passage you cite is shorter than three lines, use the inline style. The passage itself should be quoted and the parenthesis is followed by a period.
