How To Write An Excellent Research Paper Using APA Formatting Style

Knowing how to write an excellent research paper is no secret. There have been millions of research papers written some badly and some well. The ones that get the highest marks are those which follow the basic principles.

  • Address the topic or answer the question being asked.
  • Follow the requirements of the style and word count.
  • Right with simple language which flows throughout.
  • Edit and proofread your research paper before handing it in on time.

And the second of these points is that you follow the requirements of the style which is stipulated. In this case it is the style used by the American Psychological Association or the APA style. So assuming that you have all the ingredients of an excellent research paper, the only thing missing is that you follow to the letter the rules of the APA format. In brief they are as follows.

  • You must type your research paper using standard size paper.
  • You must use a 1 inch margin on all four sides of the paper.
  • You must use a well-known and clear font with 12 point Times New Roman being recommended.
  • You must have a page header which sometimes is called a running head placed at the top of every page.
  • The page header will include the relevant page number which is placed hard right, the title of your paper in capital letters which is placed hard left and this title cannot have more than 50 characters which includes both the spacing and the punctuation.

Your research paper should be divided into four major parts -- the title page, the abstract, the main body and your citations or references.

The title page has, naturally the title of your research paper, your name and the name of your academic institution.

The abstract is a separate page and it must contain the heading abstract in the centre of the page. This word has no formatting whatsoever. Your abstract of course is a summary of what is to follow.

The main body of your research paper is the actual essay or writing you have composed. It will consist of a description of the topic and a finish with a conclusion. But throughout your research paper you are more than likely to include quotations from reputable sources. These need to be cited correctly and listed in a reference section at the end of your research paper.

The beauty of the APA system is that it is freely described and illustrated with countless examples online.
