APA Style, also known as the American Psychological Association style, is commonly used to for citation within the fields of social sciences. There are several online sources and some word processing features that allow you to download and apply free research paper templates. Templates provide the framework to correctly format your writing in the APA format.

Here are a few major aspects of APA format you should know:

    General Formatting:

    Your research paper should be double-spaced on standard 8.5” x 11” paper with 1” margins on each side. APA recommends using Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, but any font that is clear and highly readable is okay. Include a page header at the top of each page. The title of your paper in capital letters flush left and page numbers should be flush right. The header is a shortened version of your title and shouldn’t run more than 50 characters.

    Title Page:

    The page header, as described above, should appear on the title page. This page will also contain the complete title of your research paper, your name, and the institutional affiliation you have in your research, all double-spaced. Your complete title should be typed in upper and lowercase letters and centered within the upper half of the page. Do not include abbreviations or words that have no purpose.

    Abstract Page:

    On a new page, center and type the word “Abstract” and center on the first line. Do not use any bold, formatting, underlining, italics or quotation marks. Starting with the next line, write a concise summary of the major points of your research paper. Your abstract should contain about 150 – 250 words and contain information about your research topic, methods, results, and conclusions.

    In-text Citation Basics:

    Citations are too many to list in this article, but basically you should follow the author-date method when citing sources in your text, for example (Johnson, 2010) with a complete reference of this source appearing in the list of references at the end of your paper. If you are providing a direct quote, you should include the author, year of publication and the page number for the citation preceded by “p.”.

Long standing quotations should be included in a free-standing block of text without quotation marks. The quote should start on a new line of text and indented ½ an inch from the left margin. Type the quotation on this new margin and indent the first line of subsequent paragraphs if there are any within the quote.
